LLIÇÓ III ELS NUMERALS Índex Introducció Cardinals Ordinals Introducció Com és el cas del català, en anglès es poden distingir quatre classes de nume-rals: cardinals, ordinals, partitius o fraccionaris i múltiples o multiplicatius. REMARQUES — Escrivim four i fourteen (amb ou), però forty (amb o). — Escrivim five (amb v), però fifteen i fifty (amb f). — Notem que, a diferència del català bilió, l'anglès billion representa mil milions, no un milió de milions. — Els substantius que representen els noms de nombres naturals catalans es tradueixen sempre pels numerals cardinals anglesos. Exemples: — el número u (the number one) — un i dos fan tres (one and two make [equal] three) — Dotze s'escriu amb un u i un dos. Twelve is written with a one and a two. REMARQUES — Cal tenir en compte que els cardinals anglesos no se solen fer servir com a ordinals; a més, els nombres escrits en xifres romanes es llegeixen normalment com a ordinals. Exemples: — el quilometre u (the first kilometer) — el catorze de maig (May fourteenth, the fourteenth of May) Nota: La data May 14 es llegeix "May fourteenth". — el vint-i-u de setembre (September twenty-first, the twenty-first of September) Nota: La data September 21 es llegeix "September twenty-first". — el segle XX o el segle vint (the twentieth century) — el papa Innocenci XIII o el papa Innocenci tretze [tretzè] Pope Innocent XIII xifres romanes pronunciades ``the thirteenth'' Excepció: Quan es tracta de la divisió de llibres, documents, etc., l'anglès pot usar els cardinals: — la pàgina trenta-dos (page thirty-two), el capítol quatre (chapter four), la secció tres, article vint-i-vuit (section three, article twenty-eight).
