ORIGEN: 1590. Literalment, colpejar casa o, metafòricament, fer mal a la part íntima.
SINÒNIMS: També hit home. Dues expressions similars són hit where one lives (lit.: colpejar on hom viu) i touch a sore spot (tocar un punt adolorit).
NOTA GRAMATICAL: L'expressió anglesa someone can/could tell correspon a la catalana es nota/notava. Quan el subjecte és I (jo), qui parla comenta sobre l'aspect de la persona adreçada; ex.: I can tell you've been crying (Es nota que has estat plorant). En canvi, quan el subjecte és you (tu), el comentari es refereix a un tercer; ex.: You can tell by her accent she's Irish (Es nota per l'accent que és irlandesa).
