Com expliquem en el capítol 92 del nostre manual Anglès difícil (http://visca.com/apac/ad/92.html), l'article la del gir català «la meitat de» no es tradueix en anglès; a més, la presència o absència de la preposició of és generalment opcional si va seguit de l'article definit. Ara, per tal de filar una mica més prim, hem fet un breu estudi sobre quins noms són més o menys propensos d'anar precedits de la preposició of. En la llista que tot seguit oferim, ordenada per freqüència d'ús (les xifres quantifiquen tal freqüència), observem que, en la gran majoria dels casos, l'anglès omet la preposició; assenyalem en negreta els noms pels quals l'ϊs de la preposiciσ seria poc usual. Tanmateix hi ha expressions, les quals subratllem, en què l'us de of és més freqüent que la seva omissió.
Com a regla pràctica, podem dir que és millor ometre la preposició excepte davant dels substantius respondents, participants i sample.

Per acabar, recordem que si el pronom half és modificat per un adjectiu, com ara first o second, cal emprar tant la preposició com l'article. Exemples:
