En català, quan volem indicar l'existència d'un cert nombre de persones, podem simplement emprar el verb ser i el número: Som quatre, Eren set, Amb en Toni serem sis, etc. Doncs, en anglès no és tan fàcil. Encara que és gramaticalment correcte dir We are four, They were seven, etc., normalment hom diu There are four of us —o sigui, N'hi ha quatre de nosaltres—, There were seven of them i With Toni there'll be six of us. Més exemples:
1) Quants éreu?
How many of you were there?
2) El cambrer pregunta: — Quants sou? I responem: — Som vuit.
The waiter asks: "How many of you are there?" And we answer: "There are eight of us."
3) Érem molts.
There were a lot of us.
