La definició clàssica d'un gerundi en anglès és la forma -ing d'un verb quan aquest fa el paper gramatical d'un nom; per exemple, Swimming is healthy (swimming fa de subjecte) i I did it without thinking (thinking és un complement preposicional). Observem que, en català, el que es vol en aquests casos és l'infinitiu: Nedar és sa i Ho vaig fer sense pensar.
Bé, doncs, el cas que ara ens interessa és aquest en què el gerundi fa de complement verbal. En anglès en són exemples I avoid seeing them (Evito veure'ls) i I don't mind working at night (No m'importa treballar de nit). Veiem una altra vegada que el català fa servir un infinitiu on l'anglès vol el gerundi. Entre els verbs anglesos que regeixen gerundis com a complement verbal n'hi ha que també accepten com a sinònim l'infinitiu to o l'infinitiu simple —és a dir, I like being alone = I like to be alone (M'agrada estar sol)— i altres que també accepten l'infinitiu to però amb un canvi de sentit: We stopped talking (Vam parar de parlar) i We stopped to rest (Vam parar per descansar).
Finalment cal esmentar la construcció «verb + complement + gerundi» —per exemple, I can't stand him/his talking that way about her— que en català se sol expressar amb una subordinada: No suporto que ell parli d'ella d'aquesta manera. Observem que el complement anglès pot ser tant un complement verbal (me, him, etc.) com un adjectiu possessiu (my, his, etc.). (Recordem que quan el gerundi fa de complement verbal està fent el paper d'un nom i, per tant, pot ser modificat per un adjectiu.) A més, en aquest context, tant en català com en anglès, hi ha casos en què l'ús del gerundi o l'infinitiu simple és opcional; per exemple, I saw him working = I saw him work (El vaig veure treballant/treballar).
