En anglès, el complement indirecte, tant si és un nom com un pronom, se sol col·locar just després del verb. En són exemples I gave him a book (Li vaig donar un llibre) i We'll bring you the wine (Us portarem el vi). ¿Ara bé, són correctes les proposicions I gave the book to him i We'll bring the wine to you?
Doncs, gramaticalment sí, són correctes, però són molt poc usuals. Com a prova d'això, quan es busca en el Corpus of Contemporary American English (http://corpus.byu.edu/coca/) el gir:
«[p] gave [p] the *»
(que vol dir «qualsevol pronom + gave + qualsevol pronom + the + qualsevol mot»), hi ha 405 resultats. En canvi, quan es busca
«[p] gave the * to [p]»
només n'hi ha 14.
Dit això, recordem que hi ha dos casos en què és obligatori l'ús del gir «verb + compl. directe + to + compl. indirecte»: quan el complement directe és it o them (e.g., I gave it to him, no I gave him it) i quan el verb és d'arrel llatina (I explained the process to him, no I explained him the process).
